🚲A Special PSA regarding E-Bikes From Sierra Vista Police, Fire, and EMS 🚲

An E-Bike has fully operable pedals and an electric motor that is less than 750 watts. License, registration, and insurance are not required to operate an e-bike.

An e-bike can be ridden on sidewalks, shared- and multi-use paths, bike lanes, or on the roadway. Arizona law states that bicycles must ride as close to the right-hand curb or edge of the roadway, except in certain circumstances. Also, any rider under the age of 18 must wear a helmet.

There are 3 classes of 3 classes of E-bikes:

Class 1: Bicycle equipped with a motor that provides assistance only when the rider is pedaling, and that ceases to provide assistance when the e-bike reaches 20 mph.

Class 2: Bicycle equipped with a throttle-actuated motor, that ceases to provide assistance when the e-bike reaches 20 mph.

Class 3: Bicycle equipped with a motor that provides assistance only when the rider is pedaling, and that ceases to provide assistance when the e-bike reaches 28 mph.

An Electric Motor-Driven Cycle typically has higher speeds than e-bikes (often over 30 MPH), a more powerful motor (greater than 750 watts), and no pedals or non-functional pedals. Because of these features, they are not classified as bicycles under Arizona law. The vehicle must be ridden on the roadway (no sidewalks or multi-use paths) and require the following:

Registration with the Arizona department of transportation and display the ADOT provided license plate.
They must be insured.
The rider must have a valid driver's license with a Motorcycle Endorsement.
The rider must obey motor vehicle laws, including helmet requirements for any rider under 18.

🚨SV PATROL BEAT🚨Around 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday Dec 30th, an officer observed a white Ford Explorer racing in the area of the 600 block of South Highway 92 Sierra Vista AZ. A traffic stop was initiated as the driver was entering the drive-thru of Culver’s Restaurant. The driver refused to comply with the officer's lawful orders.(Butter Burger on his mind⁉️) A window was then broken in order to take the male individual into custody. A DUI investigation was conducted and the vehicle was towed. Per SVPD Policy, an inventory was completed and officers found weapons and loaded magazines inside the vehicle, which were placed into SVPD Evidence for safekeeping. The driver was booked into the CCSO jail in Sierra Vista for Excessive Speed, Failure to Obey a Lawful Order, Racing, and Aggravated Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer.
