Futsal is an indoor, fast-paced, small-sided version of soccer played with a weighted ball — designed to develop:

Because of the smaller court and fewer players, kids get more touches, more involvement, and more opportunities to grow every session.

Black Women In Progress (BWIP) in Sierra Vista, AZ, a mentorship program for girls aged 7-18 designed to foster self-confidence, leadership, and STEM skills. Founded by Acacia Barnett, it offers year-round, safe, and supportive environments, including summer activities, coding, and outdoor education.

In a recent address on the House floor, Congressman Juan Ciscomani honored Sulphur Springs Valley Electric Cooperative (SSVEC) for earning the prestigious Electric Cooperative Purpose Award from the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association.

This isn’t just another award—it recognizes electric cooperatives across the country that are making real, lasting improvements in the lives of the people they serve.

During the 2022 surge in global fuel prices—when energy costs were hitting rural families and businesses the hardest—SSVEC took bold, member-first action:
• Directed 100% of its operating margin to reduce member costs
• Paid down over $8 million in fuel bank debt
• Lowered power cost adjustments to ease monthly bills
• Partnered with AEPCO to implement a fuel hedging strategy
• Increased direct communication to keep members informed

The result? Immediate financial relief for thousands across Cochise County—while still protecting long-term stability.

Ciscomani praised the cooperative’s leadership, saying their actions showed “ingenuity and resolve” in protecting the very members who own the co-op.

The recognition took place at PowerXchange 2023 in Nashville, where co-op leaders from across the nation gathered to spotlight innovation and community impact.

SSVEC isn’t just a utility—it’s member-owned, meaning decisions like this directly benefit local families, businesses, and our entire region.

SSVEC Captures Top Honors in Arizona Lineman's Rodeo!

Three first place finishes and recognition for outstanding team communication highlighted a statewide competition for linemen representing Sulphur Springs Vally Electric Cooperative (SSVEC) last week. The 2026 Arizona Lineman's Rodeo and Technical School was held in Marana, AZ and hosted by TRICO Electric Cooperative March 23 to March 25.

SSVEC apprentice linemen Gabe Ornelas and Sawyer McDonald both won top individual honors. Ornelas earned first place in the "Mystery Event," which challenged linemen to remove a conductor from a dolly and tie onto an insulator. To add to the challenge, competitors only learn the requirements of the event moments before they participate. McDonald finished first on the written test, which tests the competitor’s knowledge on all aspects of line work. And for the second consecutive year, Sawyer was awarded the grand prize of "Overall Top Hand".

Gabe Ornelas not only excelled in individual events, but also in the team events. The competitors are paired with an apprentice from a different cooperative, which requires the team to focus on communication and team work to accomplish their task. Gabe’s team not only took first place in the insulator change out event but also won overall top team.

"The rodeo continues to be a valuable opportunity for our apprentices to strengthen their skills, compete with peers from across the state, and reinforce the safety practices that are critical to our daily work," said Nathan Hodges, Senior Vice President of Operations at SSVEC.SSVEC apprentice lineman Shelby Kogan also excelled in the team events. Her team was honored for outstanding communication and teamwork, which Hodges noted is "...an achievement that reflects the professionalism and collaborative mindset we see in the field."

The statewide rodeo event provides apprentice linemen an opportunity to strengthen their skills, compete with peers from across the state, and reinforce the safety practices that are critical to daily work. The event included both classroom and hands-on training, covering topics such as rigging, fault finding, primary cable preparation, and battery and solar safety, followed by individual and team rodeo events including the knowledge test, obstacle course, hurt-man rescue, and equipment change-outs.
Line workers representing 13 electric utilities from throughout Arizona and New Mexico participated in Marana event.

They started in the same soil - same desert, same mountain shadow, same wind cutting through the San Pedro Valley. But somewhere in the growing, one reached up and to the left, and one reached out and to the right, each finding its own argument with gravity.

I softened this shot in post processing. A little Gaussian blur - let the edges breathe while keeping the light. That's sometimes how we look at the people we love most. Not with a sharp, clinical focus, but with just enough softness to see the whole picture instead of the differences.

The Huachucas don't care which direction you lean. The sunset finds us all the same way - equal warmth, equal gold. Whatever path that carried us there, the views from our earned destinations are the only ones that were ever really ours to see.

We may not always go the same directions, but we can bask in the same light.
