⚾ HISTORY IN THE M

⚾ HISTORY IN THE MAKING: Challenger Team Takes the Field at the 2026 Intermediate 50/70 West Regional!

Something truly special is happening in Nogales this Wednesday, and it’s about much more than baseball.

For the first time in the history of the Intermediate 50/70 Little League West Regional Tournament, a Little League Challenger Division team will take part in the week’s festivities, marking an exciting and meaningful milestone for the tournament.

The Avengers Inclusion Organization will proudly participate in the Opening Parade, take part in the Opening Ceremonies, and then make history by competing in a Special Challenger Exhibition Game from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Wednesday evening.

Their opponents will be a combined all-star team made up of players representing each of the participating Western Region states—a remarkable display of sportsmanship, teamwork, and inclusion.

This game represents more than competition. It celebrates the belief that every athlete deserves the opportunity to shine, compete, and experience the excitement of Little League on a regional stage. It’s a powerful reminder that baseball brings communities together and that the game is strongest when everyone has a place on the field.

If you’re attending the tournament, be sure to arrive early for the parade and opening ceremonies, then stay to cheer on these incredible athletes as they make tournament history.

Let’s give the Avengers Inclusion Challenger Team the warm welcome they deserve and celebrate a milestone that will be remembered for years to come!

🇺🇸 A LIVING HE

🇺🇸 A LIVING HERO IS COMING TO SIERRA VISTA — DON’T MISS THIS HISTORIC MOMENT

Some stories are too important to read in a history book. They deserve to be heard from the people who lived them.

This July, Sierra Vista will have the extraordinary privilege of welcoming 100-year-old World War II veteran Anderson Pollard, a true American hero whose life is woven into the fabric of our nation’s history.

A recipient of the Purple Heart for wounds sustained during the fierce fighting in Sicily, Mr. Pollard served with the legendary 92nd Infantry Division after training right here at Fort Huachuca. More than eight decades later, he is returning to the community where part of his remarkable military journey began.

As part of Buffalo Soldier Days, the City of Sierra Vista will officially proclaim itself “America’s Buffalo City,” recognizing the extraordinary legacy of the Buffalo Soldiers and the generations of Black servicemembers whose courage, sacrifice, and dedication helped shape both our nation and our community.

📅 Saturday, July 25
🕙 10:00 AM
📍 Buena High School

Following the proclamation by Mayor McCaa, attendees will have the rare opportunity to hear Mr. Pollard share his firsthand experiences from World War II—a chance to hear living history from one of America’s Greatest Generation.

The celebration begins the evening before with a special dinner on Friday, July 24, where guests will also have the opportunity to meet and hear from Mr. Pollard.

Hosted by the Southwest Association of Buffalo Soldiers (SWABS), Buffalo Soldier Days is dedicated to preserving the rich history of the Buffalo Soldiers and their lasting impact on Cochise County.

As SWABS President Demetria Warren so eloquently stated:

“If we lose our past, we will have nothing.”

From protecting settlers and mining communities throughout the Southwest to serving with distinction in conflicts across the globe, the Buffalo Soldiers left an enduring legacy of courage, perseverance, and service. Their story is America’s story—and Sierra Vista is proud to help preserve it.

This is more than an event. It is an opportunity to honor a hero, celebrate our community’s military heritage, and ensure these incredible stories continue to inspire future generations.

For additional information about Buffalo Soldier Days, contact Charles Hancock at (520) 226-7453 or c.hancock@cox.net.

Join us as Sierra Vista honors the past, celebrates our heroes, and welcomes home one of the last living members of the Greatest Generation.

PROPOSED RURAL REZON

PROPOSED RURAL REZONING DRAWS STRONG OPPOSITION AHEAD OF JULY 22 NEIGHBORHOOD MEETING

A proposed zoning change involving acres, 1/2 mile East of the Dake and Charleston Road intersection is drawing significant opposition from nearby residents as the project moves through Cochise County’s review process.

The applicant is requesting to rezone the property from RU-4 (Rural District) to LI (Light Industry District) while also seeking a Comprehensive Plan Amendment to change the property’s future land-use designation from “D-Rural” to “A-Enterprise.” If approved, the changes would allow for future industrial development on the site.

According to application materials submitted to Cochise County, no specific business or tenant has been identified. However, Light Industrial zoning permits a variety of uses, including warehouse operations, wholesaling, manufacturing, repair services, retail businesses, restaurants, convenience stores, banks, community gardens, and other commercial activities.

The proposal has prompted the formation of a neighborhood coalition made up of nearby property owners who say the requested zoning change is incompatible with the area’s long-established rural character.

According to the coalition, 24 of the 29 nearby property owners have submitted written objections to Cochise County. Residents have raised concerns about the potential for increased commercial truck traffic, noise, lighting, dust, groundwater impacts, and changes to the area’s rural atmosphere if the zoning request is approved.

Coalition spokesperson Dave Butz, who says he has lived on Dake Road for more than 15 years, believes the proposal is inconsistent with the vision outlined in the Cochise County Comprehensive Plan 2045, which guides future land use and development throughout the county.

In response to comments and questions received from surrounding property owners, representatives for the applicant, Pew & Lake, PLC, requested that the public hearing process be postponed in order to hold a neighborhood meeting before moving forward.

According to the meeting notice sent to neighboring property owners, the purpose of the meeting is to give residents an opportunity to learn more about the proposal, ask questions, share feedback, and engage in an open discussion with the development team before the case proceeds to public hearings.

Neighborhood Meeting

📅 Wednesday, July 22, 2026
🕠 5:30 p.m.
📍 102 Colonia de Salud, Building B, Suite R100
Sierra Vista, Arizona

At this time, no public hearings have been rescheduled, and the proposal remains under Cochise County staff review. Once the application is ready to move forward, updated hearing dates will be announced through the county’s public notification process.

CoolFMLive will continue following this developing story and will provide updates as additional information becomes available, and any future Planning and Zoning Commission or Board of Supervisors hearings.

TUCSON MASS SHOOTER

TUCSON MASS SHOOTER IDENTIFIED: 21-Year-Old Suspect facing multiple charges and still in hospital.

New details have been released following the mass shooting that occurred in downtown Tucson on Sunday, July 19, leaving multiple people injured and prompting a large law enforcement response.

According to court documents and Tucson police, David Leroy French, 21, of Tucson, has been identified as the suspect in the shooting at Empire Pizza & Pub in downtown Tucson.

French is now facing multiple felony charges in connection with the incident.

Court records also indicate French has a prior felony conviction. In April 2025, he pleaded guilty to aggravated assault involving a deadly weapon or dangerous instrument stemming from a late-2024 incident involving the discharge of a firearm within city limits. He was sentenced to probation on May 14, 2025, according to court records.

On his Facebook page, French mentions the following “IF YOU CANT FIND SOMETHING TO LIVE FOR U BEST FIND SOMETHING TO DIE FOR"

Authorities have not publicly released a motive for Sunday’s shooting, and the investigation remains ongoing.

An updated report from Tucson officials indicates that many of the victims have since been released from local hospitals, while others continue to receive medical treatment. Tucson Police have not yet released a complete update regarding the condition of every victim.

The Tucson Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting and is expected to release additional information as the case progresses through the court system.

As of now, French remains in the hospital and that is why there is not a booking photo released of him at this time from this incident.

CoolFMLive will continue to follow this developing story and provide updates as additional verified information becomes available.

WEEKLY WEATHER OUTLOOK: MONSOON CHANCES CONTINUE

We begin the week with a Flash Flood Watch in effect through this evening as the potential for heavy rainfall moves across Cochise County. While not everyone will experience flooding, storms that develop today could produce intense rainfall in a short amount of time, making localized flooding possible in low-lying areas, washes, and roadways.

Looking ahead, daily chances for showers and thunderstorms remain in the forecast throughout the week as the monsoon pattern continues across southeastern Arizona. Residents can expect periods of sunshine mixed with afternoon and evening storm chances each day.

Temperatures will remain comfortable for this time of year, with daytime highs near 90 degrees and overnight lows in the upper 60s, offering a welcome break from the more intense summer heat.

If you have outdoor plans this week, keep an eye on the forecast each afternoon, as storm development can change quickly. Remember, Turn Around, Don’t Drown—never attempt to drive through flooded roadways.

This weekly weather outlook is proudly sponsored by Vista Pros Heating & Cooling, proudly serving Cochise County with dependable heating and cooling solutions all year long.

The sky doesn't apologize for the storm.

It embraces the darkness, releases its energy, and then makes way for new growth.

We all face seasons that rumble louder than we'd like. Yet it's often those very seasons that shape our character, deepen our roots, and reveal a strength we didn't know we had.

Whatever this week holds, meet it with courage. The storm is never the whole story.
