TWO WEST NILE VIRUS CASES CONFIRMED IN COCHISE COUNTY‼️

Cochise County Health and Social Services announced Thursday, Sept. 10, that two human cases of West Nile Virus have been confirmed by a state laboratory, with an additional probable case reported in and around the Sierra Vista area.

West Nile Virus is transmitted to people primarily through the bite of an infected mosquito. Health officials are encouraging residents throughout Cochise County to take precautions to reduce their exposure to mosquitoes.

Residents are advised to use EPA-approved insect repellent when outdoors, wear loose-fitting long sleeves and pants when possible, eliminate standing water around homes and properties, maintain yards, and ensure swimming pools are properly treated.

According to county health officials, symptoms generally develop two to six days after infection and may include headache, weakness, muscle and joint pain, gastrointestinal symptoms, and rash. More serious cases can result in severe neurological illness, including paralysis or coma, and can be fatal.

Residents should also regularly check areas where water can collect, including buckets, flowerpots, tires, pet dishes, gutters, and other outdoor containers, as standing water can provide breeding areas for mosquitoes.

Cochise County Health and Social Services says it is actively addressing the situation and will continue providing updates as additional information becomes available.

‼️TWO JUVENILES ARRESTED FOLLOWING CANYON DE FLORES VEHICLE BURGLARY INVESTIGATION‼️

The Sierra Vista Police Department announced that two juvenile suspects have been arrested in connection with a series of vehicle burglaries reported in the Canyon de Flores neighborhood.

According to SVPD, 12 vehicles were targeted during the burglary spree. The investigation included home security footage, surveillance video from a local gas station, community tips, and search warrants that ultimately led investigators to identify two suspects.

The following is the Sierra Vista Police Department’s press release, quoted in its entirety:

“Two juvenile suspects were arrested Tuesday night in connection with a vehicle burglary spree.

On Monday, Sept. 7, the Sierra Vista Police Department responded to multiple reports of vehicle burglaries in the Canyon de Flores neighborhood. Given the number of incidents, SVPD encouraged residents to check their vehicles and report any missing items or damage.

A total of twelve vehicles were targeted in this series of burglaries. Most of the vehicles were left unsecured, and one showed signs of attempted hotwiring.

During the investigation, police gathered valuable information from home security camera footage, which captured images of the suspects and helped to establish a timeline and the route they took. Additionally, surveillance from a local gas station provided further evidence in the case.

Thanks to community engagement and tips received after social media outreach, investigators were able to follow leads that led to the identification of the suspects and the execution of search warrants.

On Tuesday, Sept. 8, Sierra Vista police arrested two juveniles in connection with the burglaries. The juveniles have been booked into the Juvenile Detention Center on twelve counts of vehicle burglary and one count of attempted theft of a means of transportation. Their genders and identities will not be disclosed in accordance with juvenile privacy laws.

“We appreciate the community’s assistance in this investigation,” Sierra Vista Police Chief Chris Hiser says. “Resident involvement was critical in the identification and apprehension of the suspects.”

‼️COMMUNITY TIPS LEAD TO MAJOR BREAK IN DOS BROS BURGLARY INVESTIGATION‼️

SIERRA VISTA, AZ — The Sierra Vista Police Department has released new information regarding its investigation into the recent burglary at Dos Bros Taco Shop, where more than $7,000 in damage and stolen money was reported.

The investigation ultimately led officers to 57-year-old William Brust.

The following press release from the Sierra Vista Police Department is quoted in its entirety:

“Sierra Vista, AZ. 09/10/26. The Sierra Vista Police Department arrested a suspect for the recent burglary of Dos Bros Taco Shop.

On Sunday, Aug. 30, at about 7:30 a.m., Sierra Vista police responded to a burglary call at Dos Bros Taco Shop. The incident is believed to have occurred sometime between the restaurant’s closing on Saturday, Aug. 29, and the arrival of employees the following morning.

The burglary resulted in over $7,000 in damage and stolen money from the restaurant.

Thanks to valuable leads from the community, investigators were able to identify a suspect and issue an attempt to locate (ATL) alert on the individual.

Then on Tuesday, Sept. 1, an SVPD officer identified a vehicle known to be occupied by the suspect and initiated a traffic stop. During the stop, the suspect, who was behind the wheel, showed signs of impairment, and the officer began a DUI investigation. A warrant was obtained to secure a blood sample for analysis. Further investigation into the burglary led to the partial recovery of stolen property and additional evidence related to the burglary.

The suspect has been booked into the Cochise County Jail on charges of burglary, criminal damage, theft, criminal trespass, possession of burglary tools, and DUI. If anyone has any further information on this case, please contact the Sierra Vista Police Department at (520) 452-7500.”

The individual arrested in connection with the investigation has been identified as 57-year-old William Brust.

The charges are allegations. Brust is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

‼️WILLCOX WOMAN CHARGED WITH DUI AFTER COLLISION WITH SCHOOL BUS‼️

WILLCOX, AZ — A 37-year-old Willcox woman has been charged with DUI following a collision involving a school bus Wednesday afternoon, according to the Cochise County Sheriff's Office - Mark J. Dannels Sheriff

The collision occurred at approximately 4 p.m. on September 9 near N. Fort Grant Road and N. Ingram Road. Investigators say the school bus was stopped with its emergency lights activated and stop sign extended when the woman failed to stop and struck the rear driver’s side of the bus.

Several children were on the bus at the time. According to CCSO, most were uninjured. A few students reported minor headaches and dizziness and were evaluated by medical personnel at the scene. All of the children were ultimately determined to be okay and released to their parents.

CCSO says its investigation determined the woman was impaired while operating the vehicle. She was transported to Northern Cochise Community Hospital and later transferred to a Tucson hospital for further evaluation.

The woman was ultimately cited and released on charges of DUI, reckless driving, and driving on a suspended license.

The Cochise County Sheriff’s Office is continuing its investigation. The Willcox Police Department and Willcox Fire Department also responded to the incident, with Willcox police arriving first on scene.

Westbound travel on Hwy 90 is blocked at this time and travel is being diverted to Moson Rd.

‼️NAMES RELEASED AS INVESTIGATIONS CONTINUE FOLLOWING TWO DEATHS IN PEARCE‼️

PEARCE, AZ — Authorities continue to investigate the deaths of Alejandro Tornero and Amanda Walker after the two were found deceased in separate locations in the Pearce area on September 3.

Tornero and Walker were married and purchased a home together in Pearce in 2019.

Tornero was killed after being struck by a vehicle while walking along State Route 181. Walker was found deceased outside a residence on Shepherd Hills Road.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety is handling the investigation into Tornero’s death, while the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office is investigating Walker’s death.

At this time, authorities are investigating the deaths as separate incidents. No official determination has been released indicating whether the circumstances surrounding the two deaths are connected.

The investigations remain ongoing.
