MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 30TH, AS CARMICHAEL NIEGHBORHOOD SCHOOL CELEBRATES 70 YEARS OF EDUCATIONAL EXCELLENCE IN SIERRA VISTA! IT’S “CHECKING IN WITH JEFF DAVENPORT,” PRESENTED BY THE SIERRA VISTA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT!
Carmichael Celebrates 70 Years — and You’re Invited!
For 70 years, Carmichael Neighborhood School has been a special part of the Sierra Vista community, serving generations of students and families. This September, we’re celebrating that history, the people who helped build it, and the generations of Bears who have called Carmichael home.
Carmichael’s story began in 1956. The school was named in honor of William Carmichael, whose wife, Margaret Carmichael, donated the land on which the school was built. Today, William Carmichael’s portrait is still proudly displayed in the school’s front lobby—a connection between Carmichael’s beginnings and the thousands of students who have walked its halls over the past seven decades.
Now, it’s time to celebrate 70 years of Carmichael!
Join us on Wednesday, September 30, for a day filled with history, community and plenty of Bear pride. The celebration will begin with a special BBQ for current Carmichael students, followed by a Ribbon Cutting and Time Capsule Ceremony at 12:30 p.m.
After the ceremony, we’re opening the celebration to the community with a 70th Anniversary Block Party! 🎉 Current and former students, staff, families, friends and community members are invited to come together and celebrate seven decades of memories, learning and community at Carmichael.
We also want our community partners to be part of the celebration! Local businesses, organizations, agencies and community groups are invited to host a table or booth during the Block Party. It’s a great opportunity to connect with families, share what your organization does and help us celebrate this milestone.
Interested in hosting a booth or table? Call the Carmichael Neighborhood School office at 520-515-2950 to sign up.
70 years. Generations of Bears. One incredible community.
Come help us celebrate Carmichael Neighborhood School: 1956–2026!

MONSOON MOISTURE GETS A TROPICAL BOOST THIS WEEKEND ☔️
SOUTHEASTERN ARIZONA — As the monsoon season begins its transition, attention is turning toward the tropics, where Hurricane Marie is expected to form later today.
The National Hurricane Center currently keeps the system well south of Baja California on a northwesterly track. While the storm itself is expected to remain well away from Southeastern Arizona, moisture associated with the system is expected to begin moving into our region as early as today.
That additional tropical moisture will increase our chances for scattered showers and thunderstorms beginning today, with activity expected to increase through the weekend.
The primary concerns with stronger storms will be heavy rainfall and potentially strong outflow winds. The increased moisture is expected to remain across the region through at least early next week, keeping daily storm chances in the forecast.
Temperatures will remain relatively mild, with daytime highs generally in the mid-to-upper 80s and overnight lows in the mid-to-upper 60s.
Keep an eye on the skies this weekend, especially if you have outdoor plans, and remember that conditions can change quickly during thunderstorms.

SIERRA VISTA COUNCILMAN AND MAYORAL CANDIDATE RESPONDS TO SOCIAL MEDIA CLAIMS
SIERRA VISTA, Ariz. — Sierra Vista City Councilman and candidate for Mark For Mayor - Councilman Mark Rodriguez, Sierra Vista, AZ has issued a statement addressing two claims he says have been circulating on social media.
CoolFMLive is publishing Rodriguez’s statement below in its entirety and as provided:
“Sierra Vista City Councilman and candidate for Mayor, Mark Rodriguez has recently become aware of two false claims circulating on social media. Taking great pride in serving the community, and believing that integrity, transparency, and accountability matter, he wants to address these claims directly to provide the public with accurate information.
The first false claim alleges that the Councilman was the subject of a criminal investigation. In 2023, an investigation was conducted concerning the actions of a city employee who was ultimately terminated. As required by law, the Sierra Vista Police Department conducted a thorough and professional investigation into the matter. Although the Councilman attended a meeting that became part of the investigation, he was never the subject of the inquiry. Investigators determined that he had no involvement in any inappropriate or illegal conduct and was cleared of any wrongdoing. The matter was also reviewed by the Arizona Attorney General’s Office, which declined to take further action. The Mayor and City Council were briefed on the findings during Executive Session. Because the matter involved confidential personnel information protected by law, the Councilman did not discuss it publicly. Doing so would have been both inappropriate and contrary to his responsibilities as an elected official.
The second false claim alleges that the Councilman was arrested by the Scottsdale Police Department in 2025 following a noise complaint at the Princess Resort. He was never arrested and had no contact with Scottsdale Police regarding such an incident.
Since announcing his campaign, the Councilman has remained focused on the issues that matter most to Sierra Vista residents, rather than engaging in negative campaigning. While misinformation can be distracting, his commitment remains the same: serving the people of Sierra Vista with honesty, respect, and dedication.
The Councilman hopes this statement addresses any questions members of the community may have. He expresses gratitude for the community’s continued support and looks forward to continuing the campaign in a positive and respectful manner.
Please contact MarkForSVMayor@gmail.com with any additional questions or concerns.”
The statements and characterizations above are those of Councilman Mark Rodriguez and are being published in their entirety as provided.

‼️MAN KILLED IN SAINT DAVID SHOOTING IDENTIFIED ‼️
SAINT DAVID, Ariz. — The Cochise County Sheriff’s Office has identified the man who died following a shooting at a Saint David residence early Sunday morning as 67-year-old Daniel Elzy of Saint David.
According to an update released by the Sheriff’s Office, next of kin has been notified and the investigation remains ongoing.
The shooting occurred during the early morning hours of Sunday, August 30, after authorities received a report of a possible burglary in progress at a Saint David residence.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, the homeowner was inside the residence with his family, including two small children, when he reported hearing what sounded like a window breaking. After checking his home security system, the homeowner reported seeing someone immediately outside the residence.
Benson Police Department officers were first to arrive and located a male subject, now identified as Elzy, outside a window of the home and appearing unresponsive. Officers began life-saving measures while medical personnel from the Benson Fire Department and St. David Fire responded. Despite resuscitation efforts, Elzy was pronounced deceased.
The homeowner told investigators that after entering the main living area, he observed a shadow near a window and believed someone was attempting to gain entry into the residence. The homeowner told deputies he was armed and fired his weapon, apparently striking the individual outside.
Cochise County Sheriff’s Office detectives responded and assumed the investigation.
Sheriff Mark Dannels previously emphasized that investigators are working to establish the facts and circumstances surrounding the shooting and asked that conclusions not be drawn while the investigation remains active.
As of the latest update, the Sheriff’s Office has not announced any additional findings or charges related to the incident.
The investigation remains ongoing. Additional information will be provided as it becomes available.

FLORIDA ORDERS FLOCK CAMERAS REMOVED FROM STATE HIGHWAYS — AS DEBATE CONTINUES IN COCHISE COUNTY
The national debate surrounding Flock Safety license plate-reading cameras continues to grow — and the latest development out of Florida echoes many of the same concerns being raised here in Cochise County.
Florida transportation officials have ordered automated license plate readers located within state highway rights-of-way to be removed, citing concerns surrounding privacy, surveillance and reported misuse of the technology.
The decision is particularly relevant locally as Cochise County communities continue debating the use of Flock cameras.
Sierra Vista previously terminated its Flock contract following public concerns, while Cochise County officials have also faced questions over the technology. More recently, the controversy reached Benson, where two Flock cameras were intentionally damaged — including one that was reportedly cut down from its pole.
Supporters say the cameras are valuable law enforcement tools that can help locate stolen vehicles, identify vehicles connected to crimes and find missing or vulnerable people.
Critics argue the concern isn’t simply whether the cameras can help solve crimes — it’s how much information is collected, who can access it, how long it’s retained and how that information could potentially be used or shared.
That leaves a question communities across the country — including Cochise County — are increasingly confronting:
Where should the line be drawn between technology that helps law enforcement protect the public and technology capable of tracking the movements of ordinary citizens?
Florida’s decision isn’t the end of the Flock camera debate. If anything, it shows the conversation happening here in Cochise County is part of a much larger national discussion.
What do you think? Are Flock cameras an important public-safety tool with the right safeguards, or do the privacy concerns outweigh the benefits?

ARIZONA AG CALLS FOR DATA CENTER PAUSE — WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR COCHISE COUNTY⁉️
COCHISE COUNTY, Ariz. — Attorney General Kris Mayes is calling for a statewide pause on approving and building new data centers, particularly large-scale artificial intelligence facilities.
The announcement comes as Cochise County continues developing its own approach to the industry.
In April, the Board of Supervisors unanimously adopted regulations requiring proposed data centers to obtain Special Use Authorization and meet additional requirements involving water use, electricity, noise, emergency planning and compatibility with surrounding areas.
No active data center applications were pending in the county at the time.
On Aug. 25, supervisors held a work session to review the regulations and discuss possible changes. Topics included distinguishing large hyperscale facilities from smaller data centers, as well as concerns about water, power, noise, traffic, environmental impacts and public transparency.
Mayes is asking state lawmakers and Gov. Katie Hobbs to pause new data center approvals while Arizona develops a statewide plan for managing the industry’s growth.
Her concerns focus largely on water and electricity. She says data centers could increase pressure on the power grid, potentially raising costs for customers, while their cooling systems and related power generation may require significant water.
Mayes also cited Arizona’s reduced Colorado River allocation as a reason to pause large-scale development while the state evaluates its long-term water and power needs.
The proposal is not a permanent ban. It would temporarily halt new approvals while statewide guidelines are developed.
For now, Cochise County has no approved hyperscale AI data center. Local officials are preparing regulations before any major proposal arrives, while the state considers whether a broader pause is needed.
Should Arizona pause new large-scale data center projects, or should counties and cities continue setting their own rules?

‼️COCHISE COUNTY JURY RETURNS GUILTY VERDICTS IN CHILD ABUSE CASE‼️
COCHISE COUNTY, Ariz. — Cochise County Attorney Lori Zucco announced that a jury has returned guilty verdicts against 43-year-old Dameon Blaise Cunningham in connection with the abuse and neglect of children at an Elfrida residence stemming from June 16, 2023.
Cunningham was found guilty on two counts of child abuse. According to the Cochise County Attorney's Office, the jury determined that Cunningham acted “knowingly,” but did not find that the circumstances were likely to produce death or serious physical injury. As a result, the offenses are classified as Class 4 felonies.
The jury returned the following verdicts:
• Count 1 — Kidnapping, Class 2 Felony: NOT GUILTY
• Count 2 — Kidnapping, Class 2 Felony: NOT GUILTY
• Count 3 — Child Abuse: GUILTY
• Count 4 — Child Abuse: GUILTY
County Attorney Lori Zucco said her trial team “fought the good fight” in seeking convictions on the more serious charges, which would have carried mandatory prison sentences. According to Zucco, the prosecution faced difficulties after the minor victims refused to testify at trial and were taken out of state by their mother.
The case was investigated by the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office, with Reserve Deputy Roger Clark serving as the case officer.
Deputy County Attorneys Michael Powell and Deana Champagne prosecuted the jury trial with Paralegal Dallas Bullington.
