BISBEE LAVANDER PIT MULTI-USE PATH GETS NEW LIGHTING UPGRADES

BISBEE, Ariz. — Bisbee City Mayor Ken Budge is giving an update news conference today on the ongoing street lighting project along State Route 80 near the Lavender Pit. The work is being completed through an existing partnership between the City of Bisbee and Arizona Public Service (APS) and is intended to improve safety for motorists and future users of the Lavender Pit Multi-Use Path.

According to meeting information, the lighting project was developed in response to years of concerns from residents in both Bisbee and Douglas regarding the lack of illumination along this section of SR 80.

City officials have previously stated that restoring the lights presented challenges because of jurisdictional responsibilities, existing infrastructure, and project funding. During the planning of the Lavender Pit Multi-Use Path, replacing the corridor with new light poles was determined to be beyond the project’s available budget.

The existing partnership between the City of Bisbee and APS provided an alternative solution. By utilizing the existing light poles, which are being protected by a new concrete barrier installed as part of the multi-use path project, the city and APS were able to move forward with restoring lighting along the corridor.

In March, the Bisbee City Council approved a $13,792 contract for the purchase of 17 dark-sky-compliant LED light fixtures, while APS agreed to perform the installation and electrical work.

According to the meeting materials, approximately half of the new light fixtures have already been installed and are currently operational. The remaining fixtures are expected to be rewired and installed after APS receives the required right-of-way (RW) permit from the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT).

Mayor Ken Budge said partnerships such as this one help rural communities complete projects that improve public safety and quality of life.

The upgraded lighting system features 40-watt, dark-sky-compliant LED fixtures that are fully shielded and contain less than 1.5% blue light, providing improved roadway illumination while helping preserve Bisbee’s dark skies. The fixtures are also designed to reduce energy consumption and long-term operating costs, with maintenance to be provided by the City of Bisbee.
