Saturday September 19, 2026 people from across the area came together for an incredible experience! Held every year on the 3rd Saturday of September in Benson AZ.

The Lantern Festival brings individuals of all ages (free entry for ages 5 & under), backgrounds and walks of life together for one awe-inspiring evening.

The lanterns used at the 9th Annual Lantern Festival hosted by the City of Benson are eco-friendly sky lanterns made from biodegradable rice paper, a bamboo or wooden ring frame, natural fiber string, and a small wax fuel cell.

Material and Biodegradability

Details:

Rice Paper Cover: The outer body uses flame-retardant, biodegradable rice paper designed to break down naturally in the environment.Frame and String: The structural rings and strings are built from sustainable materials like bamboo and natural fibers, avoiding harmful metal wires.

Fuel Cell: The small wax fuel cell is engineered to burn out completely while the lantern is still airborne, so the extinguished shell returns safely to the ground.

Are They Safe? Environmental Impact: While the materials themselves are 100% biodegradable and wire-free, sky lanterns still attract debate regarding litter and potential hazards to wildlife if left unmanaged.

Cleanup Efforts: Responsible festival organizers and local events mitigate these concerns by utilizing dedicated clean-up procedures and retrieval teams to gather debris after the launch.

UPDATE🚨BISBEE MOTORCYCLE FATALITY: A motorcyclist was killed around 2:45 am Saturday 09/19/2026 on SR-80 MP-342 near the Bisbee Lavender Pit. Coolfmlive was told it was a single motorbike accident only with no other vehicle involved. No other details were released as to the cause or name of the individual at this time. The road is projected to be open by 6:30am.
